Carolina Storms the Gate: Hurricanes Bury Montreal 6-1 to Reach the Cup Final
The wait is over. The Carolina Hurricanes are going to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since they won it all in 2006 — and they didn’t tiptoe through the door, they kicked it down. Carolina drowned the Canadiens 6-1 at Lenovo Center on Friday to close out the Eastern Conference Final in five, finally clearing the round that had been the franchise’s brick wall for a decade. Taylor Hall ran the show with a goal and two assists, and Frederik Andersen did the rest.
A First-Period Burst Settled It Early
This was over before Montreal could breathe. Carolina hung three goals on the Canadiens in the opening period — Hall banking home the first as a sellout crowd smelled a coronation — and Montreal, held to a trickle of early shots, never found its legs. By the first intermission the rout was already written.
Andersen Slammed the Door
Goals from Jackson Blake and a Shayne Gostisbehere power-play blast stretched it to 5-0, and the only puck that beat Andersen all night was a Cole Caufield power-play goal midway through the third. The Danish netminder has been the engine of this entire run — he’s now won 12 of his first 13 starts this postseason and tightened his grip on the Conn Smythe race. Seth Jarvis’s empty-netter capped it.

What It Means
This is vindication for a program that had become a regular-season juggernaut and a conference-final graveyard. Now Rod Brind’Amour — the captain who lifted the Cup here in 2006 — gets to coach in his first Final. Carolina hosts the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 1 on Tuesday, June 2 (8 p.m. ET). With the tournament’s hottest goaltender and a forecheck nobody’s solved, the Hurricanes won’t be anyone’s underdog.
